Driver’s micro-sleep led to crash

FATIGUE was behind a crash on the Capricorn Highway in April, which saw two trucks nearly collide head-on.

The driver of one of the vehicles, Mirjana Veljanoska, faced Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with driving without due care and attention.

On April 10 at 6.30am, Veljanoska had been driving on the Capricorn Hwy when fatigue began to take over.

The court heard she had been driving since 1am from Airlie Beach.

The truck she was driving crossed the middle lines of the highway and veered into the path of an oncoming truck.

The court heard that by the time she knew what was happening, she hit the other truck’s trailer; she said she’d fallen into a micro sleep.

The other truck flipped as it tried to get out of the way and landed on its side.

A boy received a laceration in the crash, while no one else was injured.

Veljanoska pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined $600 with a conviction recorded.
